Company launches innovative blockchain course for beginners with King’s College London

We have launched the first of a series of online courses with King’s College London, to help the millions of developers worldwide without specialist blockchain knowledge create applications and serve a market expected to be worth $39.7bn by 2025.

The first course, A Beginner’s Guide to Becoming a Blockchain Developer with Overledger, provides students with a foundational knowledge of blockchain, distributed ledger technologies and practical experience of developing multi-distributed ledger applications.

Currently, less than 1% of 27 million developers understand the complexities of blockchain technology.

The course introduces developers to Overledger, the world’s first blockchain-agnostic API gateway, which enables them to write apps in a dozen different coding languages that run seamlessly across most blockchains. It is intended for those with basic programming skills such as Javascript, C# or Python; no specialist blockchain knowledge or languages are required.

Dr Carmine Ventre, Professor of Computer Science, King’s College, London, course co-creator, says: “emerging technologies such as blockchain and distributed ledgers are becoming increasingly important in financial services for use cases such as market efficiencies, payment traceability and digital asset management. This course provides a solid technical introduction for beginners to a complex domain.”

Dr Luke Riley, Head of Innovation, Quant, who co-created the course, adds: “blockchain technology has traditionally had a steep learning curve. We specifically designed this education to be highly accessible and provide developers with valuable skills to create enterprise-grade mDApps.”

Students will cover topics, including:

  • The definition of a ledger
  • The components that comprise distributed ledger technologies
  • How blockchains function
  • What cryptography underpins distributed ledger technologies
  • What are decentralised applications (DApps)
  • How Overledger can function as a gateway to DLTs

Upon completion of the course, developers will gain practical experience to start creating mDapps using Overledger, including:

  • How to interact with multiple distributed ledger technologies, specifically Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP Ledgers
  • How to connect to multiple DLT networks
  • How to read blocks, transactions and state information from DLT networks
  • How to add new transactions to these DLT networks

This three-week course is free, and students can enrol at any time. Developers will receive a certificate from Quant and King’s College upon completion. The course is administered by FutureLearn, an online learning platform and partner to some of the world’s leading universities.

The DApps created in the course can function across test networks in Ethereum, Bitcoin and XRP ledger networks. Quant’s Overledger can support additional networks in Polkadot, Hyperledger and Corda to extend interoperability.
